After a long wait, news has arrived that Microsoft has released the previously teased SharePoint mobile application with its appearance on the AppStore on June 21st 2016. Initially the application will have limited availability, perhaps ironically being limited to iOS devices such as the iPad/iPhone. No beta was available pre-release, Microsoft, do however plan continued updates and improvements and have stated that they will welcome and take user feedback into account. The application is expected to receive Windows and Android iterations at a later stage, most likely Q3/4 2016.

SharePoint has long been a staple of many companies’ software requirements with its effortless ability to provide an intranet environment for employees to store and save files, keep them up to date with internal/ external matters and as an online library storing company policies/ guidelines. Furthermore, it can provide as a forum for staff to brainstorm new ideas along with the ability share progress updates with colleagues and cascade information up and down the hierarchy.

The popularity of SharePoint cannot be denied, with nearly 200 million users worldwide. The software has long provided flexibility for those wishing to work at home on laptops or home computers. However, with the popularity of mobile and tablet devices in the workplace soaring it was important for Microsoft to deliver the SharePoint App to avoid customers old and new from using alternative software for their mobile devices, which in turn could lead to changes in their fundamental infrastructure. Indeed, many customers feel this addition to the mobile community is long overdue in hitting the market.

The application is compatible with SharePoint Online, Server 2013/16 and will also support certain hybrid environments. Microsoft applications such as Office 365 and One drive will have integrated functions and native compatibility with the SharePoint mobile app, further emphasising Microsoft’s drive for cross compatibility and one and all philosophy. Additionally, Microsoft confirmed that SharePoint will be compatible with Microsoft PowerApps and Microsoft Flow.
